After nine months of work by the FUSS Core Team and the project’s current technology partner Truelite Srl, FUSS 13, based on Debian GNU/Linux 13 “trixie” (released on August 9th, 2025), is available for schools and freely downloadable by anyone.

The operating system together with all the educational packages for every school grade, will allow teachers and students to work with software that is always up to date and secure. The previous release, FUSS 12, will continue to receive support from the Debian community and from the FUSS Core Team until all schools have completed the upgrade and in any case no later than the end of August 2027.

To facilitate the update work in schools, a new cloud-init image of the FUSS 13 server has been released first, with the detailed migration procedure from FUSS 12 documented in the manual. The fuss-release-upgrader package has also been published, which allows performing an in-place upgrade of clients and standalone machines from FUSS 12 to FUSS 13 (fuss-release-upgrader) with a simple procedure described in the manual.

FUSS represents an investment that since 2005 has allowed the Province of Bozen-Bolzano to create public value because, under article 69 of the CAD - National Law for the Digital Administration, every single line of code produced by the project and every page of the manuals written for technicians, developers and users is made public through the site https://fuss.bz.it under an free software license. Anyone, anywhere can benefit from the investment made by the Province of Bozen-Bolzano in the full spirit of Public Money, Public Code, an initiative of the Free Software Foundation Europe which the FUSS project joined, since the same principles are enshrined in Italian national digital legislation (CAD) that FUSS strictly follows.
